Don’t worry, there are simple ways to handle this.

We really enjoy drinking coffee. But sadly, coffee doesn’t always agree with us and can cause an upset stomach. However, did you know that there are ways to manage this undesirable effect of drinking our beloved morning energizer?

Mixed Signals

You may have noticed that coffee doesn’t taste as good when you drink it after a rough night or on an empty stomach. In the latter case, coffee can upset your stomach. However, there are other situations where coffee can disrupt your digestion. According to Maddie Pasquariello, a dietitian based in Brooklyn, the amount of coffee you consume can cause digestive issues. She explained that when you start drinking a liquid or eating food, your taste buds send signals to your brain, which prepares your body to process and digest it. Taking small sips of coffee triggers the brain to recognize it as a liquid and signals it to be ready to absorb any nutrients in the liquid.

Drink

That’s why Pasquariello suggests drinking coffee with small sips. When you hold the liquid in your mouth for a bit before swallowing, it allows your saliva to mix with it more, which is good for your digestion. Drinking slowly can also help reduce digestive issues. Pasquariello explains that if you sip your coffee slowly over an hour, instead of quickly drinking a cold brew or an espresso shot all at once, you’re less likely to experience sudden symptoms. So, by drinking slowly and taking small sips, you can fully enjoy your coffee without experiencing as many digestion problems.
