These Six Vegetables Are Actually Fruits!

We all know that eating lots of veggies is really important. We make an effort to include different types of vegetables in our diet. But it can be tough when we realize that some of the vegetables we thought we were eating are actually fruits. Let’s learn more about it.

Fruits

Before we talk about vegetables and fruits, let’s understand what distinguishes them. A fruit is the part of a plant that has seeds and needs pollination to grow. Its purpose is to spread the species. On the other hand, a vegetable refers to the stem, leaf, bulb, root, or other parts of a plant. However, there is often confusion regarding what counts as a fruit or a vegetable.

Surprisingly, tomatoes are legally considered vegetables because they are commonly used as such, even though they meet the criteria for being fruits. Similarly, the foods listed below are often thought of as vegetables, but technically they are fruits according to the definition.

1. Green Beans

Green beans are actually considered fruits, which may be surprising. This is because they contain seeds that help the species grow. Even though they don’t taste sweet and are commonly referred to as vegetables, they are technically fruits.

2. Eggplant

Eggplants are also classified as berries, even though we usually don’t eat them raw. They’re like really large berries, but not as sweet. While they may not be the best choice for adding to your morning yogurt, they are actually considered fruits.

3. Olives

Even though we didn’t really know which food group olives belong to, we would have never imagined that they are considered a fruit. Surprisingly, they actually come from the flower of the olive tree, which technically classifies them as a fruit.

4. Pumpkin

Did you know that squashes, such as pumpkins or zucchini, actually come from flowers and are considered fruits? It’s pretty surprising, isn’t it?

5. Cucumbers

It’s even more surprising to know that cucumbers are considered fruits as well. They have a slightly sweeter taste compared to other fruits in this list. This might make it easier to understand why cucumbers can be a tasty addition to your fruit salad.

6. Peppers

Yes, even the extremely spicy peppers are actually fruits. While it may be surprising, bell peppers are also fruits, even though they are commonly thought of as vegetables. This is because all peppers, including the hot ones, originate from flowers, which classifies them as fruits.
